From the Sumerian civilization in ancient Mesopotamia to Hippocrates, the “father of medicine,” humans have long sought methods to help minimize and cope with pain. Many cultures independently found relief in medicines derived from the extracts of willow and other salicyclate-rich plants which reduced inflammation, eased pain and brought down fevers.
Pain management became more sophisticated in the 18th and 19th centuries, when chemists like Raffaele Piria and Joseph Buchner worked to isolate and purify the active component of willow extract, which we now call salicylic acid. When methods used to distill concentrated versions of this compound proved wasteful. Dr. Hermann Kolbe of Germany created a synthetic version of salicylic acid – a discovery that laid the groundwork for what would eventually become aspirin, an analgesic still used to treat a range of conditions, ranging from mild arthritis to dental procedures.
The use of opioids in treating pain has its earliest roots in the Neolithic Period around 5,500 B.C., but the practice came into its own in17th century Europe, where doctors would routinely prescribe laudanum – a mixture of opium and alcohol – for severe or chronic pain. The growing surgical practice required additional forms of pain relief, which led to the development of chloroform and other early anesthetics around the same time. It wasn’t until the 20th century that medical professionals began to take notice of opioids’ addictive qualities.
Since then, pain management has blossomed to include a wide array of treatments that help patients manage their pain effectively, including injections and neuropsychological treatments.
