The Los Angeles Superior Court will begin shifting personal injury cases from its Personal Injury Hub in downtown Los Angeles back to six local community-based Independent Calendar (IC) courts on October 10, a move that is expected to provide plaintiffs with greater access to resources.
An increase in state funding will provide the staffing needed to handle new personal injury cases in IC courthouses in the district where the accident occurred. This plan will allow for greater access to the resources necessary for plaintiffs to receive justice, as well as increased convenience for litigants, witnesses and attorneys. It will also allow jurors from the community where the injury occurred to decide each case. For attorneys, they’ll also have the peace of mind knowing that the case will stay under the management of one judge.
Starting next week, new personal injury cases outside the central district will be assigned to IC courts in Pomona, Compton, Chatsworth, Pasadena, Inglewood and Beverly Hills. Central district cases will be handled in the Stanley Mosk Courthouse.
Existing, uncomplicated cases will continue to be heard in the PI Hub until they are sent to the Mosk Courthouse for assignment to a trial court. According to the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the PI Hub is currently handling some 45,000 cases. As the inventory of pending cases is gradually reduced, a second phase of the plan will allow for the transition of the PI Hub cases to other courtrooms.
The PI Hub was established at the Spring Street Courthouse in 2013, when the state budget crisis forced Los Angeles County to shutter courtrooms. This caused delays in hearings and other issues as the volume of cases exceeded the capacity of the PI Hub to handle them.
