Despite a decrease in vehicle traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports a surge in accident-related fatalities since April 2020, caused by risky behavior like speeding and driving under the influence.
Sadly, a growing number of cyclists are victims of vehicle collisions. A recent study by OUTSIDE magazine found that 697 cyclists were killed last year in vehicle collisions — nearly 17% of them in California.
The NHTSA also reports that 30 percent of all bicycle accident injuries occur when a bicyclist is struck by a car, often when the motorist is not paying attention to the road.
Injuries sustained by cyclists can range from mild to severe, and may include broken bones, concussion or hematoma, knee damage and numbness resulting from nerve compression. Some cyclists may suffer urogenital problems stemming from pudendal neuropathy.
